The lyricism of Chet Baker cannot be doubted because Chet in his musical expressions remains as singer and musicians essentially romantic. He fits beautifully into a context created around him and for him, a context that finds in the sonority of his trumpet or in the opacity of his voice a leading element, dominator and at the same time attractive and fascinating.

The songs on this record are aimed to everyone: jazz fans and those who are not very familiar with jazz. For music arrangers Ezio Leoni and Giulio Libano the work ground with Chet has been smoothed out: there was no need to build beyond the measure, it was important to expand, enhance, galvanize what Chet wanted to express. They have alternated lyrical songs with more stringent and alive tracks. With the continuous alternation of times, expressions and atmospheres they made sure to avoid any monotony.

The orchestra that recorded the album was consisted of 16 violins, 4 violas, 4 cellos, a flute, a bass clarinet, an oboe, a French horn, a harp which matched with Glauco Massetti's alto sax, Fausto Papetti's baritone sax, Mario Pezzotta's trombone, Gianni Basso's tenor sax, Franco Cerri's double bass, Gene Victory's drums. An imposing orchestra that was able to mix perfectly and alternate purely jazzy instruments with strings during the performances.

The repertoire included in the album ranges a lot: from well-known motifs such as "Angel Eyes", "When I Fall In Love" or "I Should Care", to others less known but very pleasant tracks as "The Song Is You" or "Forgetful". Other tracks lend themselves perfectly to a wider orchestration such as "Autumn In New York", "Violets for Your Fur" or "Deep in A Dream". Another theme was treated with a thrifty intervention of the strings, almost a crown of the whole performance, represented by the recording "Street of Dreams". In the last track “Good-bye” of Side “A” Chet expresses an exceptional sadness in a very valid and unusual way.

The tracks were recorded on September 28, 1958 and October 5, 1959 at the Guertler Bros. recording studio.

La liricità di Chet Baker non si può mettere in dubbio, perché Chet nelle sue espressioni musicali rimane essenzialmente un romantico. Egli si inserisce a meraviglia in un contesto creato intorno a lui e per lui, un contesto che trova nella sonorità della sua tromba o nell'opacità della sua voce un elemento di primo piano, dominatore e nello stesso tempo attraente ed affascinante.

I brani di questo disco si rivolgono un poco a tutti: agli appassionati di jazz ed anche a chi con il jazz non ha molta dimestichezza. Per gli arrangiatori Ezio Leoni e Giulio Libano il terreno di lavoro con Chet è spianato: non c'era bisogno di costruire oltre misura, vi era la necessità di ampliare, di valorizzare, di galvanizzare quello che Chet trovava da dire nel suo intimo. Hanno alternato così a brani più lirici, altri più stringati, più vivi, hanno insomma fatto in modo che il disco nella sua alternanza di brani non avesse nessuna monotonia, ma fosse un continuo alternarsi di tempi, di espressioni, di atmosfere.

L'orchestra che ha inciso questi disco era composta di 16 violini, 4 viole, 4 violoncelli, un flauto, un clarino basso, un oboe, un corno francese, un'arpa ai quali facevano riscontro il sax contralto di Glauco Masetti, il sax baritono di Fausto Papetti, il trombone di Mario Pezzotta, il sax tenore di Gianni Basso, il contrabasso di Franco Cerri, la batteria di Gene Victory. Un complesso imponente che ha saputo amalgamare perfettamente ed alternare nelle esecuzioni strumenti prettamente jazzistici con gli archi.

Il repertorio di cui il disco è composto spazia moltissimo: dai motivi notissimi come "Angel Eyes", "When I Fall In Love" o "I Should Care", ad altri meno noti ma piacevolissimi con "The Song Is You" o "Forgetful". Altri brani poi si prestano perfettamente ad un'orchestrazione di più ampio respiro come è il caso di "Autumn In New York", di "Violets For Your Fur" o di "Deep In A Dream". Qualche altro tema è stato poi trattato con un parsimonioso intervento degli archi, quasi una coronamento di tutta l'esecuzione, mentre gran parte del tema poggia sulle note di Chet e sull’insieme dei musicisti di jazz del complesso. È questo il caso ad esempio di "Street Of Dreams". Per ultimo vi è "Good-bye", un brano di una tristezza eccezionale dove Chet esprime se stesso in un modo validissimo ed insolito.

I brani sono stati incisi il 28 Settembre 1958 e 5 Ottobre 1959 presso lo studio di registrazione Guertler Bros.
